THE THUMB
You must not; however, conclude that because you have a large thumb and knotted, spatulate fingers, you are necessarily gifted with the capacity of excelling in all practical sciences and occupations; nor that because you have a small thumb, smooth and conical fingers you are necessarily gifted with preeminent talent in every branch of the fine ails; on the contrary, the pursuit of a single science or art, or of a small number of sciences or arts | to an extent limited by the scope of the faculties of } each individual), absorbs as a rule, the whole of the stock of genius with which God has endowed the generality of men.
